Amid growing insecurity in Kenya with the latest attack in Mandera leaving almost 38 Dead Inspector General David Kimaiyo has since resigned from office following criticism from different parties with claims of failing to contain the insecurity situation in Kenya citing his resignation on personal grounds.
On the other hand credible sources indicate that President Uhuru Kenyatta has fired Cabinet Secretary for interior and Co-Ordination of National Government and in place appointed former cabinet secretary Joseph Nkaissery to take charge.
Mr David Kimaiyo has resigned as Kenya’s Inspector General of Police following criticisms that he has failed to curb armed attacks that have rocked the country and caused insecurity.
His resignation comes just hours after two other attacks in Mandera and Wajir which left 36 people dead.
“I have made my decision to retire from the Kenya Police Service over personal reasons. I wish to sincerely thank President Uhuru Kenyatta for giving me an opportunity to serve in his government,” said Kimaiyo who has served in the Kenyan police for the last 34 years.
In his state of the national address, President Uhuru on Tuesday afternoon confirmed Kimaiyo’s resignation saying he (Mr Kimaiyo) offered to have an early retirement on personal grounds.
“I have written to the National Assembly to request that they extend their seating to address the security issue,” said President Uhuru and added that Kajiado Central MP Major-General (Rtd) Joseph Nkaissery has been nominated as the Interior Cabinet Secretary.
However, the fate of Joseph Ole Lenku, the former Interior Cabinet Secretary remains unknown.
“The Government sends messages of condolences to the families of those who have lost their dear ones and stands by them during this difficult time,” said President Uhuru.
At about 2am, “heavily armed bandits” raided a workers’ camp at a quarry at Koromey area in the outskirts of Mandera Town and killed 36 Kenyans.
Survivors of the attack indicate that the bandits numbered about 20 people, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by State House.
The attack happened just four hours after three men, all armed with AK-47 rifles, attacked a club in Wajir where they shot dead one person and injured 13 others.
The masked attackers raided Ngamia Club, about 800 metres from the Wajir Police Station and shot indiscriminately at the revellers.
“Immediately, security forces engaged and repulsed them,” the statement further read.
State House released the statement even as officials of the Raila Odinga-led Coalition for Reforms and Democracy said they would hold a press conference over the attack.
